My primary challenge in working with a Broadcaster is to determine what's getting in the way of telling the story. It may be a vocal pattern, stressing inappropriate words, too much head movement, uncommunicative eyes and face, tension in shoulders and body or an over-all lack of energy. In order to be effective everything the broadcaster does with his voice and body must reinforce the message/story. My goal is to help instill good storytelling skills through vocal and physical communication so the audience will both listen and understand what's being communicated.
As a speech coach my primary goal is to help the speaker understand that we’re not just talking about presenting data. We’re talking about influencing, persuading and motivating others. Actions speak louder than words. The way we speak, walk and move, along with the gleam in our eye, convinces others we mean business. Our competitive edge lies in our passion for what we do, for what we think is right, wrong, true or false. To motivate people we must communicate with them. In working on a presentation I focus on four key areas:
My specific goal in training is to evaluate the executive’s ability to engage an audience and to help the individual “see”(through videotaping) what’s getting in the way of the message and overall effective communication.
If you're looking for an assessment of your commercial voice-over skills this might be for you. In a one hour session you'll have all your questions answered, listen to some of the top Commercial Voice-Over Demo Tapes and read 4-5 commercials for an evaluation of your abilities. Cost: $200
As voice coach to the International Professional Program at CNN, I am exposed to countless dialects on a regular basis. I think performers often mistake an accent as something that relates only to sound and attempt to "study" that accent by listening to audio tapes. An accent is part of a person, their physical being, culture, upbringing, class, etc. In developing accents for theatre and film I strongly recommend "going to the source", in other words, finding a REAL person from a particular region and observing the way they speak, gesture, shape the sound and physicalize language. If that fails I recommend watching films with actors from a particular region. Some video rentals have sections devoted to "films from other countries" with actors speaking English with their native accents.
THE COMMUNICATING
